Resolution vs. Goals: A New Perspective for 2025
Every year, people around the globe make resolutions—a firm decision to do or not do something. While well-intentioned, these resolutions often fade within the first month, or even the first week. Gyms and diet programs flourish this time of year because many of us aspire to shed pounds and feel our best by summer.
When I fail at a resolution, I tend to be hard on myself, spiraling into self-criticism. But years ago, a friend offered me a different perspective: instead of making resolutions, she sets goals. Goals are inherently more flexible and forgiving—focused on progress, not perfection.
What’s the difference?
A goal is the object of a person’s ambition or effort, a desired result that provides direction without the harsh finality of failure.
This year, my family and I embraced this idea. On New Year’s Eve, we sat down and discussed our personal and family goals for 2025.
Our Family Goals
This year, we’re continuing with the financial goal we set last year, building on the progress we’ve already made.
Another goal emerged from a heartfelt request: my daughter asked if we could revive our board game nights. She shared how much she enjoyed those evenings, especially during the holidays when we had extra time together. Life has a way of derailing traditions, but I decided to make this one a priority.
Since I’m now fully working from home, I suggested a new plan: once a week, my daughter and I will play a game together during my lunch break. Additionally, we’ll aim to fit in a family board game session as well, even if it’s something like Mario Party.
It’s a meaningful goal to strive for, even if we don’t hit it perfectly every week. Hopefully, these moments will become cherished memories—and maybe one day, she’ll carry this tradition forward with her own family.
My Personal Goals for 2025
Health & Wellness
This year, I’m tackling the 75 Soft Challenge, a gentler version of the 75 Hard Challenge by Andy Frisella. It focuses on balance and self-compassion while promoting healthier habits.Core Guidelines of 75 Soft:
- Follow a healthy diet (tracking optional).
- Exercise 20 minutes a day.
- Drink 64 oz of water daily.
- Take weekly progress photos.
- Read for 10 minutes daily (any genre).
- (Optional) Aim for 10,000 daily steps.
Flexibility:
- 2 guaranteed days off per week.
- 5 "sick" days per month.
- A $2 accountability pot for each additional missed day, donated to charity after 75 days.
This challenge is about creating sustainable habits with the support of friends and an accountability group.
Home
Decluttering remains a priority, with my focus on transforming my bedroom from a makeshift storage unit into a serene retreat.Work
As of January 1, I am officially working from home (WFH). This new chapter comes with challenges, but I’m committed to finding balance and staying productive.
Bonus Goal
Complete my Goodreads Book Challenge—exact number pending but definitely ambitious!
